DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Dash of the Runaway Wizards will take place on the field behind Woodlin Elementary School on Friday\, October 19\, 2018. \nThe Dash of the Runaway Wizards\, our annual fun run\, is an exciting and healthy way for our students to raise money for the PTA! This fun run raises money for academic support for the teachers\, educational events at school and PTA-sponsored community building activities — the Dash of the Runaway Wizards is the PTA’s biggest fundraiser for the year! Let’s join schools in all 50 states and walk to school! \n\nGet a group of neighbors and friends from your bus stop\, building or neighborhood and make a walking plan.\nWear your Woodlin gear and Woodlin colors. Get together earlier and make posters. It’s a walking party!\nArrive at school by 8:45am! Bring an extra snack/water for your child if they get hungry from the walk.\nMCPD community crossing guards will be at 16th Street and 2nd Ave AND Georgia Ave and Seminary Rd\nhttp://www.walkbiketoschool.org/\n\nWe would love volunteers to help organize neighbors to walk to school day. Feel free to post the flier around your neighborhood or building. Also\, even if you can’t walk the whole way from your home to Woodlin\, maybe park a few blocks away and walk in with your child. We will have drums available\, and as we talk about African drumming traditions and how those traditions remain an important part of the African American experience.\nDinner will be served at 6:30pm with the Program to follow.  This is a great family event for adults and children of all ages! DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 2018 Woodlin Elementary School Winter Dance on Saturday\, February 3\, 2018 from 6 pm to 8 pm. It will be held in the Woodlin Elementary School Gymnasium. The theme is “Hawaiian Luau Beach Party at WES!”. It would be great if you dressed in floral or beach-themed clothing (but please no bathing suits). There will be dancing and light snacks. DESCRIPTION:Happy New Year Woodlin Families!  \n \nPlease join your PTA on Tuesday\, Jan. 9th for our monthly PTA meeting. We are so pleased to offer a parent education class focused on talking with kids about race and racism. This will be an adult-only discussion and babysitting will be provided.  Pizza dinner will be available in the APR at 6:30\, and then the adults will move to the Media Center for the discussion from 7pm to 8pm.  See the description below.\n \n \nHow to Talk to Our Kids about Race and Racism (Tuesday\, Jan 9\, 6:30pm)\n \nEvery night\, parents and kids hear about events and incidents that are frightening\, difficult to understand\, and often uncomfortable to talk about.  Join us at the January 9th PTA meeting for a discussion about how we can talk to our kids about race and racism\, led by two experts in the field who are also mothers engaging in this discussion with their own children. \n\nNicole Lee is a strategist\, coach and public policy leader. She was the first female President of TransAfrica\, the nation’s premier African American foreign affairs organization and founder of the Black Movement Law Project\, an organization affiliated with the Movement for Black Lives. From Haiti to Ferguson\, she has led international and domestic investigations and missions documenting human and civil rights violations. A strategic campaigner\, she works with community organizations to ensure their voices and concerns are heard. As a coach\, she works with change makers to ensure they have the tools to live their best lives. As a trainer and facilitator\, she works with community organizations\, schools and families to achieve equity goals. Nicole has just completed a project entitled “75 Conversations with Parents about Race and Racism” in which she interviewed parents from all walks of life about their communications with their children. \n\nBeth Wheeler is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 12 years of training in working with individuals\, couples\, and families. Her areas of expertise are: adoption\, trauma\, sexual and gender identity.  She is experienced in working individually and in groups across differences of race\, class\, sexuality\, gender and gender identity\, ability\, and culture.  She has an education and consulting business that works with individuals\, families\, schools\, organizations and groups in building community\, having honest conversations across difference\, and increasing diversity\, equity and inclusion.  Beth is also a white\, lesbian\, and trans-racial adoptive parent raising two African American boys with her wife in Takoma Park.
