Volunteer Information
Junior Great Books
We are looking for parents to be trained to help kids in Woodlin classrooms with their reading and critical thinking. Once trained, parents can lead book discussion groups with advanced readers in grades 3-5 – over 50% of the Woodlin students in those grades -- using the Jr. Great Books materials (and possibly 2nd grade).
Woodlin’s Jr. Great Books program is being supported by the Woodlin PTA, and is led by parents like you who are interested in expanding learning opportunities for our kids. The program is fully supported by the school, takes place during regular school hours, and allows parents to actively support the students’ core curriculum. Although Woodlin has a handful of parents who have been trained, we definitely need more to continue this program this year.
In order to volunteer, you must attend a training session. Training is currently offered in Rockville on the following dates:
- October 22 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (one Woodlin parent is already registered, so you can carpool!)
- November 20 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
These sessions fill up, so often you cannot wait to the last minute to sign up. Parent volunteers also must commit to lead at least one group session of the Jr. Great Books program at Woodlin, consisting of a 6 weekly sessions, with each session lasting approximately 45 minutes to an hour.
The registration cost for the training is $139 per person, but the PTA can reimburse the costs for approximately the first five parents who register (although volunteers are welcome to make a donation to defer to costs).
If you would like to register for the training, or for more information, please contact Julie Kaplan at 301-495-3129 or jubekaplan@starpower.net. For more information about the Jr. Great Books program, check out the website, or review the materials Woodlin already has for the program by contacting Mrs. Tencer.
Remember, we can offer this valuable program if additional parents volunteer!!
